The Olympic Park is set to become an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The next information event for residents and interested citizens is expected to take place in spring 2026. Details and registration link will be provided here.

On the road to World Heritage status: Action Day in the Olympic Park on 7 June 2026

On 7 June, as part of a day of activities running from 10.30 am to 4 pm, Munich residents are invited to explore the park on two tours aboard the park railway, whilst learning interesting background information about the creation of the Olympic Park. Guided tours on the theme of “Democracy and the 1972 Olympic Games” will also be available. The guided tours are also suitable for children and young people aged 12 and over, adults are welcome.

The open-air cinema at the Olympic Lake will also be screening the film “Lebensfreundschaft” at 4 pm, which explores the special bond between Olympic architect Prof. Fritz Auer and industrial designer Hans A. Muth.
About the event

PROGRAMME:

Tour of the Olympic Park: The two-hour ride on the park railway takes you along the Olympic Lake, past the Olympic buildings and on to the Olympic Village. Experts, eyewitnesses from 1972 and committed local residents will provide information about the past, present and future of the Olympic Park, including City Planning Councillor Elisabeth Merk and Fritz Auer, one of the key ‘Olympic architects’.

The event is being held to mark UNESCO World Heritage Day and is a joint initiative organised by the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations, Münchner Forum e.V., the Verein Aktion Welterbe Olympiapark e.V., Olympiapark München GmbH, the Verein Gegen Vergessen – Für Demokratie e.V. and the Bavarian State Agency for Political Education.

Award for residential building in the Olympic Village

The building at Straßbergerstraße 24, 26, 28 and 30 in the Olympic Village was awarded the 2025 Facade Prize by the City of Munich. The jury's reasoning: ‘The successful renovation highlights the original appearance of the terrace house and can serve as a model for monument-appropriate repairs in the Olympic Village and the architectural heritage of the 1970s.’

Review: Second Information Event on October 20, 2025

At the second information event on October 20, 2025 at Kulturhaus Milbertshofen, around 100 citizens learned about the current status of the application. Head of the Department of Urban Planning Elisabeth Merk and architect Fritz Auer spoke about the future of the Olympic Park. Afterwards, the Olympic Park World Heritage Team of the City of Munich provided information about the nomination process. Citizens were able to contribute their ideas at themed tables. Afterwards, there was time for questions.
